 2016 Preview 


       American Christian completed the 2015 season with a 10-2 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 3A region four, the Patriots earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. American Christian reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Hillcrest Evergreen by a score of 30-27.

       The Patriots hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Smelley saw improvement as they won ten games following a 5-5 record in 2014.

       The high-scoring American Christian offense ranked 16th in the AHSAA. They averaged 41.3 points a game.

       Since 2010, American Christian has gone a combined 48-23. Their 68.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 3A over the past six seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, American Christian has gone a combined 201-93. Their 68.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 3A and 38th in the AHSAA.

       The Patriots are led by head coach Chris Smelley who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 15-7 over the past two seasons at American Christian. Under his direction the Patriots have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Smelley.

       Coach Smelley's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 15-7 (68.2%).

       The American Christian Patriots will play in Class 3A region four during the 2016 season.

       American Christian enters the 2016 season with a string of 6 consecutive wins on their home field at Freedom Field.

       The Patriots will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region four this season.

       The Patriots open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Northside on Friday, August 19 at Northside Stadium. Last year the Northside Rams finished with an overall record of 7-3 and in third place in Class 4A region four. The Rams lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Trinity by a score of 14-7.

       American Christian and Northside have met a total of 14 times on the football field. The Patriots have a 9-5-0 record against the Rams. They last met in 2013 with Northside winning by a score of 28-21.

       American Christian returns 3A All-State Senior offensive lineman Austin Walker. He was named to the second team last season. The Patriots also return Junior defensive lineman Dalton Beck. He was named to the second team. The Patriots also return Junior linebacker Parker Davis. He was named to the honorable mention team.
